SAN ANGELO – Two San Angelo activists wasted no time filing to fill the city council seat vacated by Lane Carter. Only hours after the City Council voted to call a special election Tuesday morning, two candidates filed paperwork to run for the Single Member District 5 seat.
According to City Communications, John Austin Stokes and Lynette Lucas filed Tuesday for the unexpired term. The special election will be held January 29, 2022.
Stokes is Executive Director of the Concho Valley Council of Governments and has been active in statewide politics.
Lucas is active in local Republican politics and ran for State Representative.
The whole special election process from start to finish will be held while the March Primary election is underway for the general election in November and could be confusing to voters. Several candidates are running for county offices and campaigning through March 1, 2022 when the primary election will be held.
The filing period for candidates for the city council seat began Tuesday and will continue through December 20.
