Gubernatorial Candidate Allen West's Wife Charged With DWI

DALLAS, TX — The wife of Texas gubernatorial candidate Allen West remains incarcerated in the Dallas County Jail after Dallas police arrested her for suspected driving while intoxicated. Allen West said the accusation is baseless.

“I’m highly pissed off right now,” West said in an Instagram video posted this morning. West said that he was in Waco last night for a campaign event with Ted Nugent when he got word of his wife’s arrest.

West talked to friends who were with his wife Friday night. They told West that they had dinner at PF Changs and all his wife had to drink was water and lemonade. Angela West, 61, had the couple’s grandson with her.

“She had my grandson Jackson in the backseat and they arrested her for suspected DWI,” West said.

After Angela’s arrest, grandson Jackson was turned over in custody of Dallas police officers at the scene. One of West’s children picked up Jackson from the police.

“She had to pick him up on the side of the road,” West said.

At the police station, West said that Angela’s breathalyzer test was negative, indicating no alcohol at all.

As of 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning, West texted with us from outside the jail. “My wife is still being held in the Dallas County Jail. I have not been allowed to see her and we have no idea when her arraignment will be. This is unconscionable,” West texted.

Angela ran for Garland City Council in May but lost, attracting only 14.32 percent of the vote in a four-way contest.

Update at 6:36 p.m. — Allen West reported that his wife has been released from jail at around 3:30 p.m. She was charged with DWI with a child aged less than 15 years old.

According to Dallas police, she was stopped in the 2300 block of Northwest Highway in Dallas for a traffic violation. The officer stopping her suspected she was impaired and gave a field sobriety test at the scene that led to her arrest. Police said blood was drawn as evidence but did not indicate the results of the blood test.

Allen West posted on Twitter that, "Angela has been released. We thank you for the many messages with support and prayers."

West told the Texas Tribune that Angela refused the blood test but police obtained a warrant. He stated further that his wife had no issues with the field sobriety test or the breathalyzer. In the video above, West angrily denied his wife had been drinking.
