San Angelo Lawman Announces Candidacy to Replace Retiring Justice of the Peace

SAN ANGELO, TX — Detective Tom Daniel, Master Peace Officer Level 3, has filed his treasurer appointment to launch his candidacy for Justice of the Peace Precinct 2.

The current Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace, J.P. McGuire, who was elected in 2010, has decided not to seek re-election in 2021. Tom Green County has four justices of the peace. They are the front-line magistrates for the county's criminal justice system. They review and approve arrest and search warrants, handle small claims civil lawsuits, review evictions for landlords, order autopsies, and respond to incidents involving deaths, among other duties. McGuire represents Precinct 2, the southeast portion of the county that includes Wall and the Goodfellow Air Force Base area.

Daniel said he views the the role of the JP is a natural progression after a lengthy career in law enforcement, similar to McGuire's career path. Daniel said he is inspired by a favorite uncle who served in the Fort Worth Police Department, decided to pursue a career as a peace officer.

Danniel studied law enforcement in college and began his career as a corrections officer in Huntsville. From there, he joined the Del Rio Police Department. After achieving the rank of Detective, he was invited into a regional drug task force where he served until its dissolution.

Twenty-four years ago he joined the San Angelo Police Department. He and his wife Toni chose San Angelo as home so that they could raise their sons here, and she could pursue her career in education with the San Angelo ISD. Toni currently serves as Associate Principal at Central High School on Oakes, the freshman campus.

During his time with the San Angelo police, Daniel said he worked in as many divisions as possible, including patrol, criminal investigations, professional standards, K-9, and narcotics. Over the course of his career he earned 6,354 hours of continuing law enforcement education, and he will retire as a training instructor.

“As a Justice of the Peace, I will continue to be able to protect people. I have worked alongside JP’s for many years, and I believe my knowledge, experience, and demeanor are a perfect fit for the bench.” Daniel said.

Rebecca Flores will serve Daniel’s campaign treasurer. To win the office, Daniel will need to win the Republican Primary in March of 2022 and then defeat the Democratic nominee in November.

The primary election is a year away and so far, no other candidates have announced their intentions to run for this position.
