Herman Cain Dies of Coronavirus At Age 74

 

ATLANTA, GA — After being hospitalized earlier this month, Herman Cain has passed away at the age of 74. According to his family, Cain had been batting the coronavirus for several weeks.

"You’re never ready for the kind of news we are grappling with this morning,” Dan Calabrese, the editor for Cain’s website, wrote Thursday in a statement. “Herman Cain – our boss, our friend, like a father to so many of us – has passed away.”

According to WFXT, the CEO of Godfather’s Pizza and one-time Republican candidate dies at an Atlanta area hospital after being admitted on July 1st. Cain was hospitalized two days after testing positive for coronavirus.

“We knew when he was first hospitalized with COVID-19 that this was going to be a rough fight,” wrote Calabrese. “He had trouble breathing and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. We all prayed that the initial meds they gave him would get his breathing back to normal, but it became clear pretty quickly that he was in for a battle.”

As a survivor of liver cancer Cain was part of the population that was at a higher risk of complications related to COVID-19.

Ten days before he was hospitalized Cain attended President Trump’s rally on June 20th in Tulsa, Oklahoma. During the event, Cain tweeted out his support for the president’s re-election campaign.

“Here’s just a few of the #BlackVoicesForTrump at tonight’s rally!  Having a fantastic time!”

Cain grew up in Georgia and was a graduate of Morehouse College. He was enlisted in the U.S. Navy before he began working on in the corporate world. Prior to becoming the chairman and CEO of Godfather’s Pizza – from 1986 to 1996 —, Cain worked as a business executive at Burger King.

Cain entered the world of politics as a senior economic advisor to Republican Bob Dole during the 1996 presidential election.

Cain put his name in the ring during the 2012 presidential election, but several scandals led him to drop from the race.

Cain is survived by his wife, two children, and several grandchildren, according to WSB-TV.
