Voter Turnout Light in Democratic Primary Runoff Election

SAN ANGELO, TX – The Democratic Primary Runoff election Tuesday drew little attention in Tom Green County with less than 3 % of registered voters casting ballots.

The ballot contained two statewide races; one for the Democratic nominee for United States Senator and the other for a seat on the Texas Railroad Commission.

There are 68,053 registered voters in Tom Green County. Unofficially, 1,842 cast ballots in the runoff election; 960 voted early and there were 882 ballots cast in person Tuesday.

Tom Green County Democrats voted for Mary "MJ" Hegar over Royce West for U.S. Senator 875 to 524.

In the Railroad Commission nominee race, Chrysta Castaneda received the most votes in Tom Green County, 907 to Roberto R. "Beto" Alonzo's 466.

Statewide, Hegar defeated West and will face incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn in the general election in November.

Castaneda also defeated Alonzo to win the Democratic nominee for Railroad Commissioner. She will face Republican James Wright in November.
