SAN ANGELO, TX -- Beto O’Rourke is behind by 6.5 percent in the latest RealClearPolitics average of all polls in the race for junior U.S. Senator from Texas. Incumbent Republican Senator Ted Cruz has led in the polls for months heading into election day. While the race has seen some tightening as expected, Cruz continues to have a comfortable lead.
In a press release on Friday, O’Rourke announced a new ad featuring Willie Nelson that highlights the Congressman’s constant travels across Texas. Entitled “On The Road Again,” the ad includes footage from O’Rourke’s journey to visit all 254 counties of Texas as he held more than 300 town halls over the past year and a half. His campaign in the same press release quoted an unnamed survey that showed the race in a virtual tie at 49 percent for O’Rourke and Cruz.
A record number of voters have cast ballots in Tom Green County and across Texas. According to the Secretary of State, 4.9 million voters cast ballots in early voting in the state’s 30 most popular counties. In Tom Green County, 24,311 voters cast ballots early. That’s out of 67,007 registered voters or roughly 36 percent.
Early voting in Texas exceeded total turnout in the 2014 election according to information from the Secretary of State’s office.
Beto O'Rourke has hailed Texas' high 2018 early voter turnout as a positive sign for his campaign, which has proved to be tough competition for Republican Senate incumbent Ted Cruz. "If North Texas continues to turn out in the record numbers that we've seen, shattering every midterm total for as long as we've been looking at them, in some cases rivaling presidential voter turnout, then we're going to win this race," O’Rourke said Friday.
In the 2016 Presidential election, over 800,000 more Texans voted for President Trump over Hillary Clinton. In the 2014 midterm, 960,951 more Republicans voted than Democrats in Texas.
There are two contested races locally and the San Angelo ISD bond propositions generating interest as well.
Incumbent Republican Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Susan Werner is challenged by Democrat Sally Ayana.
Incumbent Republican Pct. 4 Tom Green County Commissioner Bill Ford is challenged by write-in candidate Gilbert Gallegos.
The San Angelo ISD has two bond proposals on the ballot. Proposition A is for $111 million and would provide for security improvements and new classrooms for elementary and middle schools. Proposition B would provide funding for a new 3,000 seat gymnasium at Central High School and a new field house facility at Lake View High School. A similar bond proposal failed by two votes in May.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott is also on the ballot. The first term Republican is challenged by Democrat Lupe Valdez, the former sheriff of Dallas County. Abbott leads by double digits and was in San Angelo last Wednesday.
The elections office in the Keyes building downtown IS NOT a polling location on election day.
