Beto vs Cruz Pushes San Angelo's Voter Registration to Record Levels on Final Day
SAN ANGELO, TX – Today is the last day to register to vote in Texas for the 2018 elections and the Tom Green County Elections office is staying open until 6 p.m. to accommodate those who still want to register.
Elections administrator Vona Hudson said Tuesday voter registration has been extremely busy, even approaching presidential year numbers. From Sept. 24 to today, 2,377 new voters have registered in Tom Green County in part because of the efforts of the campaigns of Senator Ted Cruz and challenger Beto O'Rourke.
The high amount of interest in this election also has a huge amount of voters requesting ballots by mail. Hudson said they have had 2,964 requests for mail in ballots.
On November 6, voters will be casting ballots for the U.S. midterm elections along with state and local races and bond issues.
All 435 seats of the U.S.House of Representatives will be up for election and 34 seats in the Senate.
The highly contested race on the ballot will be Ted Cruz versus Beto O’Rourke for the junior U.S. Senate seat. The second item of importance will be a second bond election for San Angelo ISD.
The May 2018 bond election failed by two votes, so the school board went back to the drawing board and came up with two propositions reflecting the community’s feedback.
San Angelo residents will also be voting for a Justice of the Peace for Pct. 1 and a County Commissioner for Pct. 4.
In the Justice of the Peace race, Republican incumbent Judge Susan Werner is challenged by Democrat Sally Ayana.
Republican Pct. 4 County Commissioner Bill Ford is challenged by write in candidate Gilbert Gallegos.
The following is a list of important voting dates:
