In San Angelo, Senator Ted Cruz Feels the Heat

SAN ANGELO, TX — A packed house awaited U.S. Senator Ted Cruz when we arrived about 25 minutes behind schedule at Miss Hattie’s Restaurant in downtown San Angelo for a campaign rally Thursday afternoon.

Cruz was met with a mostly friendly group of motivated citizens for his opponent Beto O’Rourke, the darling of the country’s progressive left, who held up their black and white ‘BETO’ signs. Interspersed with the Beto supporters from time-to-time were Cruz supporters holding Cruz signs. Not flinching, Cruz approached them and noted that because this is a free country, they can express their opinions. The exchange was friendly.

Once inside the restaurant, Mayor Brenda Gunter, also the proprietor of Miss Hattie’s, made a bold introduction, leaving no question what party and candidate she favors.

Cruz admitted he was feeling the heat.

“We’re 68 days out and we’ve got a fight on our hands. The extreme Left, they’re angry. They’re energized. A few minutes ago, they were dancing outside the window. And they are unified by their hatred of the president,” Cruz said.

Democratic Party opponent Beto O’Rourke supporters could be seen holding up ‘BETO’ signs outside the front windows of the restaurant when Cruz began his speech.

“I’m going to tell you that this is dangerous. It’s resulting in a couple of things. One of the things is that tens of millions of dollars are flooding into the state of Texas from liberals all over the country. But another thing it’s going to result in is in November, we’re going to see record-shattering Democratic [Party] turnout,” Cruz warned.

“Now here’s the good news. This is Texas. And in Texas, there are a whole lot more conservatives than there are liberals,” Cruz said. The election on Nov. 6 boils down to one thing, Cruz said. “Turnout, turnout, turnout!”

Cruz’s stump speech incorporated two general ideas. The first was recounting the four big accomplishments of the Republican-led federal government. The second point of his speech was to warn Republicans and Cruz supporters that his campaign was running against a well-financed opponent with liberal support in dollars coming in from all corners of the country.

Cruz stressed accomplishments first.

Since President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2017, the Republicans have controlled both houses of the U.S. Congress and the executive branch. Because of this, Cruz said, “We are seeing incredible victories for the American people.”

Among the accomplishments of the Republicans in Washington D.C., Cruz said, were tax reform, regulatory reform, the start of repealing Obamacare, and the appointment of conservative federal judges.

“I knew If we could deliver on those four, it would have a long-lasting and powerful impact in the state of Texas,” Cruz said.

On tax cuts, Cruz said, in December, the Republicans passed the biggest tax cut of a generation. Two key ingredients of the tax overhaul that Cruz stressed were the doubling of the child tax credit and the doubling of the threshold of assets before the death tax kicks in. Cruz said the elimination of federal tax on inheritance for most estates helped farming and ranching families keep their land. Much of those assets are exempt from the death tax.

Federal taxpayers will not realize many of the benefits from the Republican tax reform until 2019, Cruz said. Next year, 90 percent of Americans will fill out their taxes on a postcard. The tax reform doubled personal exemptions, relieving most taxpayers from filing itemized deductions.

“Personally I think that ought to be 100 percent, and we ought to adopt a simple flat tax and abolish the IRS,” Cruz said. “But 90 percent is a very good start.”

On regulatory reform, Cruz said the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate has been able to confirm Trump cabinet appointees, many of whom have “peeled back” many of the federal regulations.

“These are regulations that under President Obama were hammering the state of Texas,” Cruz said. “They were hammering oil and gas, hammering farmers and ranchers, and Ag,”

“The result of tax reform and pulling back regulations is that the Texas economy is booming,” Cruz said to loud applause.

The third accomplishment, Cruz said, was the Republicans’ work towards repealing Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act. The complete repeal is not yet complete, Cruz said, but eliminating the individual mandate, or the part of the law that required everyone to purchase health insurance, was a major accomplishment towards complete repeal. Cruz claimed credit for leading the fight to accomplish that.

The fourth accomplishment of the Republican majority was the appointment of federal judges.

Cruz said, “The judges have been an unmitigated success of the Republican majority and the Trump presidency.”

Cruz named the newest appointee to the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice Neil Gorsuch, a conservative jurist appointed this year. “And we are about to appoint Brett Kavanaugh,” Cruz promised. Kavanaugh is a conservative justice on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia who President Trump appointed to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.

But the Supreme Court appointees are just the tip of the iceberg, Cruz said. “We have confirmed conservative constitutionalists up and down the federal judiciary. Last year, the Senate confirmed more court of appeals judges than any time in history in the first year of a president’s term.”

Miss Hattie’s main dining room and portions of the rear were packed with supporters. In all, about 200 people attended the rally. Tom Green County Republican Chairman Jeff Betty was very pleased with the event.

Cruz made his campaign swing through Abilene and San Angelo yesterday. Campaign officials said he would hold a rally in McKinney over the Labor Day weekend with Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

Try 45 mins late.. When did Rafael stop hating trump for disrespecting Mrs. Cruz? He is right, but he misses the point. Everybody is angry. The left, right, conservative and progressive. Independent and moderate. Standard Times reported about 60 people. I saw a bit less. Don't tell me trump was here doing the counting? Was it lyin' Ted's largest crowd......ever? Broke records did it? I tried to ask if he still has his Obamacare coverage. Ignored questions, as usual

From my experience selling tickets in similar-sized venues downtown, it was 200 people, +/- 20.

When the tickets will be available for trump's stump for Rafael. Supposed to book the largest stadium in Texas for an October visit.(IF he is still President).

What kind of a man lets another man, a ‘Serial Philanderer’ and ‘Pathological Liar’, verbally abuse his wife....and welcome him to his house? A sorry one, that's what kind.

After reading some of the responses to Senator Ted Cruz feels the Heat, it seems that the junior Senator from Texas agitated our local Democratic Party by:

1. Making them wait 45 Minutes in 100 Degree heat so that they could welcome him to town by protesting his arrival.
2. Being angry with Senator Cruz for not hating President Trump.
3. Being upset because Mr. Hyde said there were two hundred +/- people attending the Cruz rally when one of the local Democratic leaders saw fewer than the sixty as reported by the Standard Times.
4. Being angry because Senator Cruz refused to answer questions from participants.

My wife and I attended the Cruz Rally and even though we arrived early, she barely found seating and I stood against the wall by the small impromptu stage. There were people sitting on the floor as well. I would say that the sweltering Democrat was close to correct concerning the delay of Senator Cruz’s arrival. The difference between us was that he was hot, sweaty, and angry while waiting to wave a black and white Beto sign in the Senator’s face. Meanwhile, I was standing in air-conditioned comfort waiting to applaud Senator Cruz upon his arrival.

Waiting for candidates to arrive is a pleasure if you’re there for the right reason. My grandson and I stood outside a hall in West Virginia for three hours in the rain so that we could attend a Trump rally. It was Great!

As far as a Democrat being angry with Senator Cruz and President Trump goes, well, they haven’t had much else to do since November 2016.

Concerning the dispute over the number of participants attending the Cruz Rally goes, both the Democrat that speaks as if was in the room and Mr. Hyde are incorrect in their counts. The local Democratic leader who saw a bit fewer than sixty and Mr. Hyde that estimated 200 +/- are both incorrect. According to Christian Reporter News that put on the event and verified ticketed attendees as they entered, there were three hundred and fifteen people attending with a large number turned away. Sounds like a mini Trump Rally to me.

Concerning Senator Cruz not fielding questions is concerned he seemed more than willing to listen and respond. To my recollection, he answered questions raised by two Hispanic ASU disabled vets, a number of ASU students, and at least one highschooler.

If our local democratic leader was really in attendance, and he has no reason to distort the truth, he is unfortunately victimized by impatient anger, failing eyesight, deafness, and a lack of cyphering skills.

Rafael Cruz(because he is not white, only pretending to be by using ted)hated trump before he liked trump. I am angry with Rafael because some in our military are still on govt assistance. Angry because vets still get the run around at the va. Angry because at last count, 20 vets die by suicide a day. THAT, is what the concerned vets of America, financed by the Koch bros should be concerned about. Angry that Cruz has stood by while trump puts his mar a lago friends in charge of VA policies. WTF! It could have been 20 thousand in attendance, and Rafael could have read green eggs and ham again, it would not have mattered, he would still be selling fear, hatred, and his usual lies.

It is a sure sign when personal attacks take the place of meaningful debate. Do you agree Cajun Texan? I add one more to James Masons list, no pay raises for federal civil service workers, seems all the funds were given to the billionaires.

Ever serve Old Salt? I volunteered for the draft during the Viet Nam buildup and lost my hearing before it was over. Our youngest girl was a medevac pilot for the 101st and is 100% disabled after being shot down twice. Our oldest girl is a VA physician working with our oldest veterans and is slowly making a change at the VA.

The VA is an unwieldy piece of bureaucracy that has grown worse with every elected President since WWII. Trump is making a difference at the VA ever so slowly. What really needs to happen is that our elected leaders and bureaucrats from both sides of the isle should get the VA and the Vets should get health care elsewhere. Trump has opened the way for better care.

Calling other people liars is like throwing a boomerang, it comes back to you.

The 101st Airborne was converted to an Air Assault Division. Air Assault is helicopter borne attack where soldiers either rappel down by lines from a helicopter or deploy when the helicopter lands in a LZ (Landing Zone.) the 82nd Airborne jumps from planes. Both use Medevac helicopters to evacuate the wounded.

We are losing 20+ men and women to suicide daily since before Obama took office and could probably do a better job for our vets if it weren’t for the financial burden incurred by providing welfare for illegal aliens. That said, the politicians would probably find another way to waste the money.

Veterans are a pawn used by both parties but Trump has done a better job helping them than any President in recent history, mostly with no help from Congress

Why yes, I did serve. Well the circle is complete. Illegal immigrants get the blame. The lie is what trump has done for the VA. The ACA did more and it has been under assault from the right since passed. He is slowly privatizing it at a greater cost, which takes from the VA system. That makes no sense. Less for more.

Here’s a listing of benefits undocumented immigrants expressly do not receive:

Children’s Health Insurance (CHIP)

Disability, aka Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Food stamps, aka The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

Health insurance, aka insurance via the Affordable Care Act (ACA)

Medicaid

Medicare

Social Security

Welfare
