Early Voting Turnout Only 2.3 Percent in Tuesday’s Runoff Election

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The polls were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday last week and only 410 out of 64,471 voters cast ballots in person for the Democratic and Republican Primary Runoff elections in Tom Green County.

According to Tom Green County Elections Administrator Vona Hudson, her office received 1,060 ballots by mail for a total of 1,470 votes or roughly 2.3 percent of registered voters casting ballots early.  That makes each ballot cast so far worth about 44 votes.

In Tom Green County 578 Democrats requested mail in ballots while 1,174 Republicans requested mail in ballots for the runoff election.

The Democratic Primary ballot in Tom Green County has only the runoff for the party’s nominee for Governor of Texas.  The candidates are Andrew White and Lupe Valdez.

White is the son of former Texas Governor Mark White and had never held public office.  Valdez is the former Sheriff of Dallas County. She was the first openly gay hispanic woman elected to that office.  In the March 6 Primary election, Valdez got 42.89 percent of the vote while White received 27.41 percent in a nine candidate race.  Valdez is heavily favored to win the runoff. The winner will face incumbent Texas Governor Greg Abbott in the November general election.

There is also only one race on the Republican Primary runoff ballot and that’s for Justice for the 3rd Court of Appeals, Place 6 between Michael “Mike” Toth and Donna Davidson.  Toth got 39 percent of the vote in the March Primary while Davidson got 31.49 percent in the four person field. The winner of the runoff will face Democrat Gisela Triana in the November general election.  The seat is open because current justice Republican Bob Pemberton decided no to run for reelection.
