Mike Hernandez Kicks Off Campaign for San Angelo Police Chief

Mike Hernandez will announce his intention to run for San Angelo police chief at a gathering of his supporters Thursday. He will possibly face 12-year incumbent Police Chief Tim Vasquez should Vasquez announce his candidacy for another four-year term.

Hernandez will make the announcement at his home, at 5:15 p.m.

Hernandez is a lieutenant in the San Angelo police department, where he as served for 25 years. Prior to that he served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

“I will bring a fresh approach to the police department,” Hernandez said. “It is time for a police chief who will focus on the job here in San Angelo and has the respect of the officers who serve us.

“I also think voters deserve a choice, and I am willing and qualified to offer them that choice.”

During his 25 years on the force, Hernandez has served on patrol, narcotics, the gang unit, special operations, community services, training division, and the SWAT team. He currently is the lieutenant (division commander) in charge of the late night shift on patrol.

Hernandez was born and grew up in San Angelo. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, a prestigious leadership course of command staff; less than one percent of all law enforcement personnel in the world are invited to attend.

Unless voters approve the proposal for appointed police chief in November, the next election of a police chief will occur in May 2016.

Yes, we, the voters do deserve a choice! We also deserve the right to vote! But our illustrious city council thinks we don't, and that our police chief should be appointed...why? What do they gain by that? Mmmm. They say it's so we can be like everybody else in Texas; not every city in Texas appoints their police chief. Don't they know we, the taxpayers don't mind the hassle of voting for our chief? We are smarter than they think we are...we are not incapable of making an intelligent choice, and we don't need a council or a mayor that wants to take our choices away from us. This group of city "planners" are clueless as to how to spend our tax dollars, and waste it on things like enforcement of mandatory spay and neuter laws, a very expensive militarized police vehicle that might get used once a year, and building improvements to buildings that are only used by an elite few. They repair southland blvd which wasn't in bad shape on the "rich" side of town and continue to ignore roads like Bell street on the "poor" side of town which has been voted the worst road in San Angelo 10 years in a row.

Mr. Hernandez, I hope your name gets put on a ballot, but our city council will probably get their veto on that...

Poor Major & city counsel, Want their thumb on the chief to do as they tell him to do. No the people of San Angelo deserve a police chief that is not beholding to the major & council. We see how our money was wasted in the trash deal, just one of many mistakes made by this City administration. It is extremely irritating to me as well the way they put propositions on the ballot, so to vote against a proposition you have to vote yes, or vice versa. Why not include elections together with county, state and federal. Oh that is right you know you will loose when included with other elections, but waste money on separate elections, no big deal we will just raise taxes.
