SAN ANGELO, TX — A heat advisory is in effect for most of the Big Country from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with heat index values approaching 105 degrees, the National Weather Service San Angelo office said.
Very hot temperatures are forecast to continue through the weekend, with daytime highs generally in the upper 90s to low 100s and heat index readings — how hot it feels — expected to reach 105 to 110 degrees in portions of the Big Country, Heartland and Concho Valley.
The advisory covers a broad area including San Angelo, Abilene, Ballinger, Brownwood and surrounding communities. Forecasters urged residents to drink water before feeling thirsty, avoid outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and stay in air conditioning when possible.
Triple-digit temperatures and elevated heat index values are expected across much of the region into next week, according to NWS data.
Tropical Storm Bertha, located in the Gulf of Mexico, is forecast to track northwest into the northern Gulf today before moving westward along the northern Gulf coast Wednesday through Friday. The storm is expected to weaken into a tropical depression by Friday morning before reaching the upper Texas coast Friday into Saturday.
No impacts from Tropical Storm Bertha are expected across West Central Texas through Friday. The forecast track and intensity remain highly uncertain Wednesday and beyond due to potential land interaction along the northern Gulf coast.
The NWS San Angelo office said it will continue monitoring the storm.
