Flood Watch Issued For West-Central Texas

SAN ANGELO, TX — The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for the Concho Valley, Heartland and Interstate 10 corridor from 4 p.m. Sunday through Monday evening.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop along a slow-moving cold front. Rainfall totals are forecast to reach 1 to 2 inches in most areas, with pockets of heavier rain that could produce totals exceeding 5 inches.

The watch covers communities including San Angelo, Brady, Junction, Ozona, Sonora, Mertzon, and San Saba.

An Excessive Rainfall Outlook shows a slight risk of excessive rainfall leading to flash flooding across much of the region Sunday afternoon and night. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop within a moisture-rich environment, with some storms capable of very heavy rainfall in short periods. An isolated severe thunderstorm with locally heavy rainfall cannot be ruled out Sunday.

Excessive runoff may produce flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying or flood-prone areas, especially area roadways.

The National Weather Service urges drivers never to drive onto roadways covered in water and advises residents never to attempt to walk, swim or drive through flowing floodwaters. Officials remind the public to “turn around, don’t drown.”

Looking ahead, much hotter temperatures are expected midweek. Highs are forecast to reach the mid-90s to low 100s in many locations Wednesday and Thursday, including 100 degrees in Abilene and San Angelo and 102 in Sweetwater. Precipitation chances are highest Sunday and Monday, ranging from 30 to 75 percent across the area, before dropping sharply later in the week.
