Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for San Angelo Area

 

SAN ANGELO, TX — A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect Sunday afternoon for Tom Green County, including San Angelo, as a storm producing large hail and strong winds moves through the area. 

The National Weather Service office in Abilene/San Angelo issued the warning, valid until 5:45 p.m. CDT. Golf ball-sized hail and winds up to 60 mph are possible. As of 5 p.m., quarter- to half-dollar-sized hail is forecasted to fall in Water Valley, with the storm tracking toward Carlsbad, Grape Creek and the northern portions of San Angelo, the NWS said. 

The warning covers a population area of 117,365 people, along with 91 schools and five hospitals, according to NWS graphics. 

A broader severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect through 9 p.m. CDT for a large swath of west-central Texas, including the San Angelo and Abilene regions. That watch warns of hail to baseball size or larger, wind gusts up to 80 mph and the possibility of a tornado or two. 

Residents in the warned area are urged to take shelter and monitor updates.
