Tornado Watch in Effect North of San Angelo; More Expected South

 

SAN ANGELO, TX — A tornado watch was issued Wednesday for Haskell and Throckmorton counties in Texas and a broad swath of Oklahoma as forecasters warned of possible strong tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds. 

Tornado Watch #86 is in effect until 12 a.m. CDT Thursday, April 2, the National Weather Service said. The watch covers an area with a population of 2,529,618, along with 1,188 schools and 126 hospitals, according to the NWS graphic. 

A couple of strong tornadoes are possible, forecasters said. Scattered hail up to apple size and wind gusts up to 80 mph are likely. 

The NWS office in Abilene/San Angelo said additional watches will be issued later Wednesday evening for areas farther south that will include Abilene, Sweetwater, Brownwood and San Angelo.
