2024: A Record-Breaking Year in Weather for West Central Texas

 

SAN ANGELO, TX - As 2025 begins, the National Weather Service has declared 2024 the hottest year on record for Abilene, with an average temperature of 68.7°F.

San Angelo also recorded its third warmest year with an average of 69.4°F.

The heat peaked with record highs of 113°F in Abilene on August 21 and 112°F in San Angelo on August 22. The coldest temperatures of the year dipped to 9°F in Abilene and 11°F in San Angelo on January 15.

Precipitation was mixed across the region. Abilene received 27.78 inches of rain, 2.54 inches above normal, while San Angelo ended the year slightly below normal with 19.33 inches. The wettest days for both cities occurred in May and November, respectively.

When it comes to severe weather, the San Angelo National Weather Service office issued 352 severe thunderstorm warnings and 43 tornado warnings. The most extreme wind gust reached 88 mph in Albany on April 1, while hailstones up to 4 inches were reported multiple times in May.

Looking ahead, forecasters are monitoring two potential scenarios for next week’s weather as a strong cold front pushes into the area. The most likely outcome predicts dry conditions with highs in the 30s and 40s and lows in the 20s.

A less likely but possible scenario could bring even colder temperatures and increased chances for snow.
