BRADY, TX - White crappie in Brady Creek Reservoir are reaching the legal length of 10 inches in just 1.57 years, according to a recent survey conducted by the Inland Fisheries San Angelo District. This growth rate is considered rapid for the region.
The survey revealed a slight decline in the crappie population, with few small fish observed—a trend attributed to declining water levels over the past 4-5 years. Most fish sampled measured between 9-11 inches, indicating healthy conditions thanks to the abundance of Threadfin Shad and Gizzard Shad, which were frequently found in survey nets.
Researchers retained 14 fish at the legal length limit for age and growth analysis using otoliths, hard calcium carbonate structures in fish heads that can be examined to determine age, much like tree rings.
For anglers planning a trip to Brady Creek, officials noted the highest concentration of crappie is located on the lake’s north side near the dam.
