SAN ANGELO, Texas – Weather experts advise residents to keep an eye on the skies Saturday afternoon for additional severe weather after Friday's tornados, high winds and hail.
As we reported Friday, a large tornado ripped through Coke County and Runnels County damaging buildings, downing power lines and overturning vehicles. The severe line of storms included tornadoes, large hail, high winds and heavy rain causing flash flooding. Another tornado was reported east of Wall causing similar damage there.
The tornadoes missed the city of San Angelo, which was never under a Tornado Warning, but heavy rain and some hail pelted the city.
A cold front, as of 3 a.m. Saturday morning, lay just north of Amarillo in the Panhandle, poised to advance southward into the Big Country by late morning. Showers and storms are probable along and near this front through the morning, with significant activity expected by mid-afternoon.
The potential for severe weather includes large hail, strong tornadoes, damaging winds, and flash flooding. Initially discrete cells are forecasted to merge into a severe line of tornado thunderstorms by late evening, traversing West Central Texas overnight.
Following another round of severe weather, conditions may begin to improve by early Sunday morning. Subsequently, a drier pattern is anticipated, providing respite from severe weather.
Today: Expect showers and thunderstorms, likely after 4 p.m., some of which could be severe. Partly sunny with a high near 85. South southeast wind shifting to east in the afternoon at 5 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60% with new rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms are likely before 10 PM, followed by continued showers and possibly a thunderstorm between 10 PM and 1 AM, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms thereafter. Some storms may be severe, accompanied by heavy rainfall. Low around 62. East northeast wind at 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80% with new rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
Sunday: A 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1 PM. Partly sunny with a high near 79. East southeast wind around 5 mph, becoming north northeast in the morning.
