Flooding Forecast Fizzles...

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The forecasted and much anticipated heavy rain and flooding event for Saturday has diminished greatly and most of the Concho Valley will only see scattered thunderstorms with light rain Saturday afternoon.

Prepare for a somewhat soggy afternoon and evening as a significant weather system rolls into the Big Country and northern Concho Valley areas today. Anticipate isolated to scattered showers and a few thunderstorms this morning, with activity likely ramping up by midday. The main event will be a larger, more organized area of showers and thunderstorms developing just west of our region and sweeping northeastward across our area throughout the afternoon and early evening. This system is forecasted to exit our eastern and southeastern counties by early tonight.

Areas south of a line from Brownwood to Water Valley to the Panhandle of northwest Tom Green County are under a marginal risk for severe storms. Temporary street flooding may be possible in parts of San Angelo.

Rainfall totals for today into early tonight are projected to range between half an inch and 1.25 inches, with localized amounts exceeding 1.5 inches possible. Heavy downpours within a short timeframe may lead to street and roadway flooding, as well as minor flooding of low-lying areas.  Most areas will see less than a half an inch of rain.

Here's what to expect in the forecast:

  • Today: Showers likely with the possibility of a thunderstorm, followed by showers and thunderstorms after 1 pm. High temperatures near 60 degrees. Expect a northeast wind of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%, with new rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.
  • Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 10 pm. Cloudy conditions with a low around 46 degrees. A north-northeast wind of 10 to 15 mph is anticipated. Chance of precipitation is 60%, with new rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, though higher amounts are possible in thunderstorms.
  • Sunday: Mostly cloudy skies with a high near 63 degrees. Northeast winds around 10 mph are expected.

Stay weather aware and take necessary precautions as this weather system moves through our area.
