ERCOT Asks Texans to Conserve Energy Monday Morning

AUSTIN, Texas – In response to the ongoing cold spell, ERCOT has issued a Conservation Appeal for Monday, January 15, spanning from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. CT. Despite the challenging conditions, it is important to note that there is no emergency, and an ample supply of power production is available.

Due to the persistently freezing temperatures, heightened demand, and unusually low wind, ERCOT anticipates lower operating reserves in the morning hours of Monday, January 15, prior to the solar ramp-up. However, the situation is not indicative of an emergency. In an effort to manage the demand-supply balance, ERCOT urges Texans to conserve electricity use during the specified timeframe, if it is safe to do so.

Similar conditions are expected on Tuesday, January 16, and ERCOT will closely monitor the situation, keeping the public informed through various communication channels.

It is crucial to emphasize that the Conservation Appeal for tomorrow does not signify an emergency situation at present. ERCOT remains vigilant and will communicate further if conditions change due to sustained freezing temperatures and high demand during the morning hours.

For those experiencing outages, it is important to note that they are local in nature and not related to overall grid reliability. Individuals are encouraged to check with their local electric providers for more information.

Understanding ERCOT Conservation Appeal

An ERCOT Conservation Appeal is a request for Texans to voluntarily reduce electrical usage, emphasizing safety. Conservation serves as an industry-standard tool that aids the grid by lowering demand for a specific period, typically during morning hours in winter. This proactive approach helps grid operators balance generation supply and customer demand.

Who Should Conserve?

ERCOT calls upon all Texans to reduce their electric usage on Monday, January 15, from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. CT. Additionally, all government agencies, including city and county offices, are requested to implement energy-saving programs at their facilities.

With all the city, county and schools closed tomorrow and Ercot is still wanting people to conserve only proves our grid is in bad shape.
