SAN ANGELO – Residents of the Concho Valley are advised to prepare for an impending cold front set to deliver frigid conditions by Monday. The current outlook indicates a continuation of brisk and chilly weather this morning, with temperatures dipping into the low to mid-30s. Northwest winds are anticipated to persist at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph. As a result of these colder temperatures and brisk winds, the morning wind chill values are forecasted to plummet to the mid-teens to mid-20s.
By late this afternoon, the relentless gusts are expected to taper, transitioning to southwesterly winds at speeds of 10 to 15 mph.
Anticipate an uphill battle for temperatures this afternoon, struggling to climb to the upper 40s to mid-50s despite the sunny skies. Tonight, as the pressure gradient tightens once more, winds will regain strength, ranging between 10 to 20 mph with occasional gusts up to 30 mph. With mostly clear conditions tonight, temperatures are likely to plummet back to the upper 20s to mid-30s.
Looking Ahead
The mid-to-long term forecast indicates a significant shift in weather patterns. Low-level southwest airflow will usher in warmer and dry conditions on Wednesday and Thursday, marking temperatures above normal with highs in the upper 60s to near 75.
A strong cold front will sweep south across the region on Friday, ushering in colder temperatures and gusty winds. Wind chill values in the teens are expected by Friday morning, followed by diminishing winds as weak surface high pressure builds in.
The real concern arises from an impending arctic airmass building to the north later this week, particularly behind the approaching storm system. By Sunday, an arctic cold front is slated to advance southward, prompting a drastic temperature drop of 20 to 30 degrees immediately after its passage. By Monday and Tuesday mornings, lows are forecasted to plummet into the lower to mid-teens, with wind chills several degrees below zero north of the San Angelo to Brownwood line. Afternoon highs on Monday may barely breach the 30s to lower 40s.
It is imperative to prepare for the impending bitterly cold weather expected next week and stay updated with the latest forecasts. As of now, the long-term forecast indicates a dry spell.
Protect all outdoor pets, plants and pipes. Wrap pipes to keep them from freezing, move plants inside, and for pets, bring them inside. If you can't bring pets inside, then make sure they have plenty of shelter, food and access to fresh water.
Stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to brace for the upcoming severe cold snap in the Concho Valley area.
