NWS Warns of Extreme Wildfire Danger All Week

SAN ANGELO – Extreme Wildfire Danger everyday this week in West Texas has prompted the National Weather Service office in San Angelo to issue the first of several anticipated Red Flag Warnings for the Concho Valley Monday.

According to Federal Government Meteorologists, extreme heat, high winds and extremely dry fuels will combine to create conditions in which any wildfire that ignites has the potential to spread rapidly out of control.  The dangerous conditions exist across all of West Texas.

The NWS has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Concho Valley and Big Country for Monday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.

There have been 70 days over 100 degrees in San Angelo as of Sept. 3, 2023 this year.  There have also been 8 days 110 or higher in 2023.

The forecast calls for high temperatures around 104 degrees with winds from the South at 10 to 15 mph and gusty with gusts above 25 mph.  Expect similar conditions with high temps ranging from 103 to 105 everyday for the next seven days.

There is no rain in the forecast.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions will occur.  A combination of strong winds, low humidity and very dry fuels will contribute to extreme fire behavior.

Residents are urged not to burn anything outdoors, especially trash or debris.  A Burn Ban is in effect in most counties and will remain throughout the duration of this week.  Welding and all outdoor activities that could create a spark are highly discouraged.  Use extreme caution while grilling.
