SAN ANGELO – A cluster of isolated strong thunderstorm clouds bristled Tom Green County Thursday night with hundreds of lightning strikes, high winds, a dust storm and less than three tenths of rain at the airport.
Some isolated rain showers developed Thursday afternoon to the west and south of San Angelo and grew into severe thunderstorms as sunset approached. The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the area which included radar-indicated winds of over 60 mph and constant lightning. There was no hail and very little rainfall.
The Tom Green Co. Sheriff's Office issued a Nixle about a dust storm near the Roberts Rd. and U.S. 87 area southeast of Wall and advised drivers to avoid the roadways because of limited visibility.
Most of the northwest part of the county remained dry or saw only a trace of rain but the southeast areas of town saw .29 inches causing minor street flooding in isolated areas near Goodfellow Air Force Base.
The severe thunderstorms developed during an Excessive Heat Warning and a Red Flag Warning, both of which have been extended through Friday evening at 9 p.m. The warnings will likely be extended daily by the NWS through the weekend into midweek because the same high temperatures, low humidity and gusty winds will be present.
