SAN ANGELO – Tuesday will mark the 50th day in 2023 that San Angelo has had temperatures reach above 100 degrees and there are potentially another 30 days on the way.
Aug. 8 the temperature is forecast to reach 109 with an Excessive Heat Warning and a Red Flag Warning for wildfire danger. That will make 50 days above 100 degrees this year. The last time the afternoon high was under 100 was July 22.
The seven day forecast has afternoon high temperatures in San Angelo between 104 and 109 with heat indices as high as 112. Expect those warnings to be re-issued each day for the rest of the week at least.
Temperatures this high require anyone venturing outdoors to take extra precautions. Wear suitable clothing to protect yourself from the sun; stay hydrated, and take plenty of breaks in the shade. reschedule strenuous outdoor tasks to the early morning or very late evening hours.
Take care of pets and children. Make sure all outdoor pets have plenty of shade, fresh water and food. Never, ever leave either a child or a pet in a hot car. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke will have live long consequences for pets and children.
The threat of wildfires increases everyday without rain as dry fuels become more volatile. Be very careful with any activity that could produce a spark like welding or grilling. There are bans on outdoor burning in most West Texas counties so put off burning brush or trash until the ban is lifted. Best not to burn down your neighbor's she shed or man cave.
September is coming along with slightly more tolerable warm temperatures and possibly some rain so hang in there.
