Rangeland Fire Danger & Excessive Heat Warnings Issued for West Texas

SAN ANGELO – August has arrived in West Texas in typical fashion with excessive heat and extremely dry conditions and the National Weather Service has issued both a Rangeland Fire Danger statement and an Excessive Heat Warning for the Concho Valley and surrounding areas that could stretch through most of the week.

According to the NWS office in San Angelo, afternoon high temperatures will reach 107 degrees exceeding the criteria for an Excessive Heat Warning.  The record high temperature for this date is 107 for San Angelo, so that record could be met or broken this afternoon.

In addition to the record high temps, fuels are critically dry in the area and the Texas A&M Forest Service says the area is under a high to very high threat of wildfires.

Everyone spending time outdoors Tuesday afternoon should drink plenty of fluids, wear suitable clothing and sunscreen, take plenty of breaks in the shade and watch for the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Never, ever leave a child or a pet locked in a vehicle in Texas, running with the A/C on or not.  You know better.

There are Burn Bans in almost every county in West Texas so all outdoor burning of any kind including welding is strongly discouraged.  Don't do anything that will create a spark; it's just too hot and dry.

Expect the wildfire advisories and heat warnings to continue at least for the next seven days.
