SAN ANGELO – Warnings about excessive heat and wildfire danger have returned to West Texas Monday after a brief respite Sunday.
As promised, the Excessive Heat Advisory is back in effect until 9 p.m. Tuesday while elevated to near critical wildfire conditions will persist through Friday.
The National Weather Service says afternoon high temperatures will be in the 105 to 108 range through Thursday. Overnight temps will drop only into the upper 70s and there's no rain in sight.
Temperatures this hot can exacerbate heat related illnesses. Stay in an air-conditioned room if at all possible. Individuals working outdoors should stay hydrated, take plenty of breaks in the shade and wear proper clothing to protect from the sun. Those participating in outdoor activities should follow the same precautions including scheduling strenuous activities in the early morning or late evening hours and wear plenty of sunscreen. Sunburn sucks.
Be sure to take proper care of outdoor pets, children and the elderly. All of them should be allowed inside in this intense heat. If not, at least make sure they have plenty of fresh water, shade and access to food.
And never, ever, under any circumstances, leave a child or a pet in a locked car.
Look for wildfire danger warnings to increase over the next week as the heat and drought intensify.
