SAN ANGELO – A line of heavy thunderstorms parked over San Angelo Saturday afternoon inundating streets and drainage areas with flood waters stranding motorists and washing out road construction areas.
Thousands of people took shelter in local businesses as the midafternoon storm dumped torrential rain on the city on the busy first day of the Independence Day Holiday weekend while folks were busy shopping and preparing for to celebrate.
Many shoppers at H-E-B waited out the storm in the store as the parking lot was flooded by the heavy rainfall.
Commuters across San Angelo were stranded on the road or had to find alternative routes around flood prone low water crossings. The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for the city as between 1.5. and 2.5 inches of rain fell in places.
The San Angelo Police Department issued a NIXLE warning telling motorists to avoid all low water crossings due to the substantial rainfall.
Road construction on College Hills Blvd. from Ave. N to Millbroook was completely flooded and areas of road bed material were washed away on cross streets and driveways that were waiting to be paved.
There were reports of stalled out vehicles and stranded motorists in several locations and most main streets were flooded during the heavy afternoon traffic. There have been no reports of serious injuries.
The NWS recorded .85 inches of rain at the airport Saturday while there were reports of three inches and above around town. There is another chance of rain Sunday afternoon before the clouds move out and the sun returns on Monday.
