SAN ANGELO – The National Weather Service office in San Angelo has upgraded the Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning and extended the duration from noon to 8 p.m.
The NWS has also issued a High Wind Warning from noon to 10 p.m. Thursday.
Threatening weather conditions are now forecast to intensify Texas Independence Day afternoon.
Strong west to northwest winds of 24 to 40 mph could gust to 55 mph and combine with very dry air and tinder dry fuels to create extreme wildfire conditions.
Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible.
Any wildfires that ignite could quickly burn out of control and threaten people, pets, livestock and property. All outdoor activity that could cause a spark is highly discouraged including grilling and commercial welding.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical wildfire conditions will occur.
A High Wind Warning means people should avoid being outside during the duration of the wind event. If possible, remain in the lower level of your home and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.
