Polar Vortex Sends West Texas into Deep Freeze Friday Morning

SAN ANGELO – Temperatures in San Angelo fell overnight to almost single digits as a Polar Vortex major winter storm blanketed much of the nation canceling thousands of flights and creating holiday travel chaos heading into the Christmas weekend.

In San Angelo, the temperature dropped to 12 degrees in the early morning hours Friday with wind chill values well below zero.  Temperatures in rural areas in the northern Concho Valley Counties reached single digits.  Mathis Field recorded a trace of snow on Thursday as the cold front plowed though the area.

There are reports of houses and businesses without water because of frozen pipes Friday morning. ERCOT is reporting normal conditions across the state as the electric grid continues to operate normally.

According to the National Weather Service office in San Angelo, a Freeze Warning and a Wind Chill Advisory remain in effect until midday Friday.

Temperatures will remain below freezing until Saturday afternoon but even then, wind chill values will remain in the 14 to 24 degree range.

Expect a warming trend to begin Sunday afternoon, Christmas Day, with highs reaching around 50 degrees.

This information will be updated as conditions change.
