Excessive Heat Warning & Wildfire Danger Advisory for West Texas Wednesday

SAN ANGELO – The threat of wind driven wildfires is high this Wednesday and record high temperatures are expected region wide again as the searing heatwave continues with little relief in sight.

According to meteorologists with the National Weather Service office in San Angelo, the record high temperature for July 20 is 108 degrees and that's also the forecast high.  With record temperatures, gusty southeast winds and low humidity, the Excessive Heat Warning has been extended through 10 p.m. Wednesday night and a Fire Danger Statement has been issued for Wednesday afternoon.

The ongoing heatwave is causing rapid evaporation of surface water sources, withering crops and damaging rangeland forage for livestock and wildlife.  This drought will have a significant impact on the regional economy for years.

Residents are advised to stay inside an air conditioned building if possible again today.  If you must work or be outside for extended periods of time, experts recommend you drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, wear lightweight, loose fitting clothing, take plenty of breaks in the shade and avoid direct sunlight as much as possible especially during the afternoon hours.

Health officials are also warning driver to never, ever leave a child or a pet in a locked hot vehicle.  That could lead to serious heat related illnesses and death.

Any wildfire that is ignited could quickly spread out of control in these conditions.  All outdoor burning for any activity that could produce a flame or spark is highly discouraged.

Officials with ERCOT say the electric grid is stable and do not anticipate any issues with providing electricity currently.

Look for a slight cooling trend beginning Thursday with afternoon highs around 102 degrees.  There is a possibility that afternoon high temperatures will only reach 99 degrees by Saturday before heading back up to around 105 by Monday.  2022 is shaping up to be one of the hottest and driest on record for West Texas.

This continues to be a serious and dangerous weather situation.
