SAN ANGELO – The stifling heat wave continues Thursday as the National Weather Service office in San Angelo has issued another Heat Advisory for West Texas from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday.
The big weather chance Thursday is a 30% chance of thunderstorms between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. according to NWS meteorologists. Any storms that develop will be scattered and short lived. The main weather threat will be cloud to ground lightning, strong gusty winds and possible brief, heavy rain.
Most of the day will be miserably hot and dry. Look for a high of 103 degrees and higher for the next ten days. The Heat Advisory means conditions will allow for an increase in heat related illnesses. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and check in on vulnerable friends and neighbors frequently.
And never, ever leave a child or a pet in a hot car. If you do, be prepared to have smashed windows and maybe even slashed tires.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas reported Thursday morning there is plenty of power generation to meet demand; however, with light and variable winds across West Texas hampering generation from wind turbines and partial cloud cover developing in the afternoon possibly hampering solar power generation, there might be a need to request residence conserve energy again.
If you are spending time outdoors working or recreating, wear lightweight, loose fitting clothing, a large hat to provide shade, and slather on the sun screen. Take plenty of breaks in the shade and stay hydrated. If possible, spend time in an air conditioned building.
There is a burn ban in effect in most Concho Valley counties and outdoor burning in an ongoing drought is a really bad idea anyway. The bottom line is use common sense to avoid tragedy during this extended and dangerous heat wave.
The slight rain chance Thursday afternoon is the last chance of rain in the forecast in July.
