SAN ANGELO – The drought across West Texas is intensifying with no rain over the next ten days and wildfire danger on the rise.
According to the National Weather Service office in San Angelo, there is a Red Flag Warning for the Concho Valley from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and then a Fire Weather Watch for Sunday afternoon.
South to southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with frequent gusts above 35 mph will combine with relative humidity levels in the single digits and tinder dry fuel to create extreme wildfire conditions.
A Red Flag Warning means that extreme wildfire conditions are occurring.
A Fire Weather Watch means that there is a potential for critical wildfire conditions.
Either way, it is hot and dry and any wildfire which ignites has the potential to spread rapidly and cause major property damage and endanger lives.
Drought conditions now in 2022 are similar to those during the drought of 2011.
There is no measurable precipitation in the next ten days and forecasts are for drought conditions to increase over the next several months.
This is a serious weather situation.
