NWS: Extreme Wildfire Danger Will Give Way to Thunderstorms Tuesday Night

SAN ANGELO – The threat of dangerous wildfires Tuesday afternoon will give way to the possibility of severe thunderstorms across the Concho Valley Tuesday night.

According to meteorologists with the National Weather Service office in San Angelo, high winds, low humidity and extremely dry fuel will create dangerous wildfire conditions Tuesday afternoon so a Red Flag Warning will be in effect from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical wildfire conditions will occur.  That combination of high winds, low humidity and dry fuel will contribute to extreme wildfire behavior.

Tuesday night, a pacific cold front will move through the area dropping temperatures and bringing the threat of severe weather.

The cold front will combine with a strong upper level storm system to generate strong to severe thunderstorms mainly north of a Hamlin to Sterling City to Sonora line.  The main threats tonight with the storms will be large hail, damaging winds and dangerous lightning but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

The chance of rain is 50%.  Look for afternoon temperatures to top out near 90 degrees Tuesday afternoon before falling to the mid 50s overnight.  It will be much cooler Wednesday with highs only reaching the lower 70s region wide.  Temperatures will remain below seasonal averages through Thursday before returning to normal.
