SAN ANGELO – The coldest air of the season is coming to West Texas and the Concho Valley later this week and residents are urged to prepare now for below freezing temperatures and hazardous driving conditions for days.
According to meteorologists with the National Weather Service office in San Angelo, an arctic cold from will blow into the Concho Valley by Wednesday with temps staying below freezing through Saturday.
There is a 70% chance of rain on Wednesday with high temperatures in the mid 40s. Temperatures will continue to fall Wednesday night into the teens with freezing rain, sleet and snow. Thursday there is a 70% chance of snow with a hight of 23. Thursday night will be frigid again with a low around 14 degrees. Friday's temperature might briefly reach above freezing at 35 degrees and then drop to 15 degrees Friday night.
Saturday will see a warming trend with highs reaching the upper 40s.
Roads will become slick and hazardous across the region. Power lines and tree limbs will also be covered with ice which could cause power outages and damage from falling limbs.
As with every storm system, conditions could change rapidly throughout the week. Residents are urged to prepare now by making sure pipes, pets and plants are protected. Experts recommend filling vehicles with fuel before the severe winter weather hits.
Recommendations also include making sure households have plenty of food and water and emergency supplies.
