SAN ANGELO – The Christmas weekend forecast calls for record smashing heat and dangerous high winds instead of beautiful, serene white snow blanketing the countryside this year.
Meteorologists with the National Weather Service office in San Angelo are predicting well above temperatures across West Central Texas through Saturday.
High temperatures will reach the mid to upper 80s region wide through the Christmas holiday weekend.
The primary feature of the forecast for the next seven days is a ridge of high pressure over the area which will allow for record breaking high temperatures for Christmas.
A strong, low level jet stream will increase wind speeds to 15 to 20 mph and gusty through Christmas Eve adding to the potential for visible condensation trails from commercial airliners across the region. The winds combined with record high temperatures and a lack of moisture could create conditions for potential wildfires.
There is a burn ban in effect for Tom Green County and most surrounding counties and residents are encouraged to be extremely cautious when grilling for the holiday weekend.
The above average temperatures and below average precipitation will continue well into next week and even possibly into the new year.
