SAN ANGELO, TX – The National Weather Service office in San Angelo has issued a Flash Flood Watch for the Concho Valley through 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.
The watch area includes Coke, Concho, Crockett, Irion, Menard, Runnels, Schleicher, Sterling, Sutton and Tom Green counties through Wednesday evening.
Heavy rainfall has fallen across much of the Concho Valley, northern Edwards Plateau and portions of the northwest Hill Country. Rainfall totals of 2 to 5 inches, with localized amounts over 8 inches, have fallen across portions of the area this morning.
Additional showers and thunderstorms, some producing heavy rainfall, are possible this afternoon into Wednesday. Any additional rainfall that is received may result in flash flooding.
You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
In addition, the NWS has issued a Flood Warning for the Middle Concho River above Tankersley until Wednesday morning. At 9:15 a.m. Tuesday the river stage was 10.2 feet. Flood stage is 18.0 feet. Moderate flooding is forecast.
The Middle Concho River flows into Twin Buttes reservoir. There is also a flood warning for Schleicher and Sutton counties which could cause the South Concho River to rise at Christoval and also add more runoff into Twin Buttes.
The Middle Concho is expected to rise above flood stage Tuesday with a crest of 22.9 feet this afternoon. It will then fall below flood stage this evening.
At 22.0 feet, Moderate flooding will occur. Water will cross Ranch Road 853. Secondary roads and low water crossings will be flooded. This crest compares to a previous crest of 23.6 feet Oct. 1959.
