PHOTOS: Hidden Gems in San Angelo State Park on World Ranger Day

SAN ANGELO, TX – There are hidden gems all over the San Angelo State Park and many are well known like O.C. Fisher reservoir, the bison herd and the official Texas Longhorn herd.  But there are also other hidden gems scattered throughout the park; some are in plain sight and some are, well...of the beaten path.

Some of those hidden gems are in the series of photos below.

The first is an abandoned concrete tunnel that ran under a railroad track in what is now the Bald Eagle Creek area of the State Park.  The railroad was abandoned in the 1940s when construction on the North Concho (now O.C.Fisher) dam began.

The next set of photos includes a three-foot barrel drain under a long abandoned paved road in the middle of the park.

This structure is hard to find but worth the trip.

Anyone want to crawl through this thing behind me?

Cougar Overlook in the center of the San Angelo State Park offers some great views.  The photos below show some of the natural beauty.

The abundant wildlife in the San Angelo State Park is varied and beautiful if you can catch a glimpse.  The ever popular bison and longhorns are fed regular and are easy enough to see during regular scheduled viewings on Saturday mornings.

Some of the wildlife are elusive to say the least.  Deer are plentiful but sometimes difficult to see.  Javalina are the same way.  Unfortunately, the remains of one Javalina are in the photos below.

The San Angelo State Park has many recreational opportunities including fishing, hiking, biking, nature trails, bird watching, the bison and longhorn and much more.
