SAN ANGELO, TX — Saturday is the West Texas Hunting and Outdoorsman Expo from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the First Financial Pavilion at the San Angelo rodeo fairgrounds. This is more than an expo this year. Four large attractions are incorporated into the show.
Frank Addington, Jr. is an archery marksman. The Boerne native's demonstrations of archery techniques have wowed audiences across the U.S. for over two decades. The hallmark of his show is hitting a flying baby aspirin through the air with an arrow shot from his Hoyt bow. Addington said his purpose is to encourage kids of this generation to leave the video games and TV alone for a while to spend time with family outdoors.
Addington will present his archery show at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. inside the expo hall in the Pavilion Saturday.
Also performing in the expo hall is Twiggy the Water-skiing Squirrel. Twiggy skis around a heated swimming pool. The act was founded in 1979 when Chuck and Lou Ann Best adopted a squirrel orphaned by Hurricane David in Florida. Chuck taught the squirrel to water-ski behind a remote-controlled boat. Today, Twiggy IX’s show’s purpose is to teach water sports safety.
Twiggy performs in the expo hall at 12 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Connected to the show is a barbecue cook-off. Promoter James Pettitt said the entries for the contest have been brisk this week. He expects 20-30 contestants. Cookers will be competing for an 80 percent payout of entry fees for the grand prize, reserve grand prize, as well as best chicken, brisket, and ribs. There is a separate contest for best beans. Judging for the beans begins at 11 a.m. and the awards ceremony will be at 4:30 p.m.
The 4H Archery Club will have a range set up where archery techniques will be taught, demonstrated, and attendees can have hands-on practice with 3D targets.
During the activity-packed show, 25 vendors will be in the expo hall demonstrating and/or selling hunting and outdoors items like knives, firearms, and hunting/outdoors equipment. Among the vendors are The Outdoorsman, Angelo Pellets, Safari Studios, Family Power Sports, and Henderson Tractor and Implement.
Doors open at 9 a.m. Saturday. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for kids 5 to 15 years old. Kids under 5 are free. Learn more at the official website.
