OREM, UTAH — Conservative activist Charlie Kirk has died from his gunshot wound suffered while speaking at a college campus in Utah on Wednesday, his spokesman Andrew Kolvet confirmed.
He was 31.
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead,” President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, adding, “No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
Kirk was shot in the neck while on stage at Utah Valley University, a video on X showed.
The person who was taken into custody was not the suspect, according to the AP, and it is unclear if authorities are still searching for the shooter.
Kirk was a prominent activist for conservative values and a well-known supporter of President Donald Trump. He spoke at numerous college campuses over the years, having debates with students about their liberal beliefs.
He co-founded Turning Point USA, an organization that advocates for conservative politics on high school and college campuses.
Trump issued a public statement afterward, urging Americans to pray for Kirk and his family. He described Kirk as"a great guy from top to bottom" Trump wrote, "GOD BLESS HIM!"
