Veterans Day 2024: Observances, Closures, Facts

SAN ANGELO, TX - Veterans Day, observed on Nov. 11, honors individuals who served in the U.S. military.

This year, Veterans Day falls on Monday, and federal, city, and, some county offices, including the U.S. Postal Service, will close in observance. Banks, such as Chase and Wells Fargo, will also close, while the New York Stock Exchange will remain open.

Veterans Day’s significance traces back to the end of World War I, with an armistice taking effect on Nov. 11, 1918. Originally known as Armistice Day, it was officially recognized as a federal holiday on May 13, 1938. In 1954, Congress changed the holiday’s name to Veterans Day to honor veterans from all U.S. conflicts.

The holiday is distinct from Memorial Day, which honors military personnel who died in service. Veterans Day instead recognizes all veterans, living and deceased.

National parks will open to visitors free of charge, and many stores and restaurants are expected to operate with regular or reduced hours.

In communities nationwide, parades and celebrations are scheduled, with some events occurring on adjacent weekends to accommodate more participants.
