WASHINGTON — A widespread Verizon service outage on Monday morning left tens of thousands of customers without the ability to make calls, send texts, or access mobile data.
More than 100,000 Verizon users reported issues with their cell service, according to the online outage tracker, DownDetector.
The outage, which hit many iPhone users, resulted in phones switching to “SOS mode,” limiting functionality to emergency calls only. The disruption was first reported early Monday. Verizon confirmed the issue in a statement, saying, “Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to identify and solve the issue.”
While Verizon has not yet provided an exact timeline for when the service will be restored, the company’s support account has been addressing customer concerns on social media platform X.
iPhone models with iOS 14 or newer are equipped with satellite SOS capabilities, which allow users to make emergency calls when outside of a cellular service range. Android phones also have a similar feature.
For those experiencing the outage, Verizon recommends using Wi-Fi calling as a temporary workaround. Customers can also switch carriers, though this would require porting their number and signing up for a new service.
