Secret Service Director Resigns After Trump Assassination Attempt

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle has resigned following the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump, according to multiple reports.

Cheatle has faced heavy scrutiny for her agency's failure to protect Trump, allowing a shooter to fire numerous shots — one of which hit Trump's ear — at a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13.

An attendee at the rally was killed, while two others were critically injured.

Cheatle was questioned by lawmakers during a hearing on Capitol Hill on Monday. She called the attempt on Trump's life the Secret Service's “most significant operational failure” in decades.

Republicans and Democrats grilled Cheatle for the agency's glaring missteps. Cheatle admitted the Secret Service was told about a suspicious person two to five times before the shooting at the rally.

She also said that the roof from which the shots were taken had been identified as a potential vulnerability days earlier.
