Marines Use Sword to Cut Corps’ 242nd Birthday Cake

 

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The United States Marine Corps celebrates its 242 birthday today, November 10, 2017 and Angelo State University held a special ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday in the University Center commemorating the event.

ASU Director of Affiliated Military and Veteran Services Susan Williams presided at the Veteran’s Day celebration in conjunction with the Marine Corps Birthday.  

The keynote speaker was Sergeant Major (Ret) Troy Hensley, USMC.  Hensley is a native of West Texas and holds the Bronze Star Medal with Gold Star for subsequent awards for Heroic achievements, Purple Heart, Naval Commendation Medal with a Combat ‘V’, Naval Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation and numerous other decorations and awards.  

Sergeant Major Hensley told ASU students to study hard and study history.  

The celebration included a call to order by First Sergeant Robert Gomez, USMC who is an education major, the invocation was by Master Sergeant Phillip Nichelson, USMC a graduate student in Intelligence, the National Anthem was performed by Lauren Martin, a pre-nursing major.  

There was a pinning ceremony for Vietnam Veteran Robert Gomez Sr.  

The USMC tradition is for the oldest marine and the youngest marine to cut the USMC birthday cake and they get the first two pieces symbolizing handing experience from the old to the young warrior.  

Saturday, November 11, 2017 is Veteran’s Day and there is a parade set for downtown San Angelo beginning at 11 a.m.
