Petroleum Products: Deodorant

There are a few chemicals that go into making a stick of deodorant, but when it comes to making it smooth and solid, our good friend petroleum is the one on call.

Used in the form of propylene glycol, which may be added to silicone, the petrochemical serves the purpose of softening products to make them more applicable.

Just like everything else in the chemical world, there are advocates for and against the use of this and other ingredients in deodorants, and a wide range of natural products have appeared on the market.

Some of the natural deos really go out on a limb. There’s one that’s a paste that has to be heated, stirred and smeared on. Sounds pleasant.
