Petroleum Products: Lotion

The fact that petroleum is found in many lotions, moisturizers and hand creams probably doesn’t come as much of a shock to anyone. Vaseline is a household name, and we all know that the brand makes petroleum jelly and a line of lotions.

Many dermatologists recommend the use of petrolatum (petroleum jelly) to moisturize dry skin, and indeed a great number of cosmetics and lotions on the market include the distilled form of crude oil.

A number of researchers suggest, however, that although petrolatum may lock in moisture within the skin, it may also contribute to dryness, as the film that forms where applied actually locks moisture from the air out.

Arguments for and against the use of petrolatum to combat dry skin are plentiful, with credible sources speaking on each side of the argument. One thing that no one seems to have refuted, however, is that petroleum jelly breaks down latex condoms. Happy lubricating!
