What Women Need To Know About Pregnancy and Breastfeeding During Coronavirus Pandemic

SAN ANGELO, TX – As the spread of the Coronavirus continues to dominate headlines across the world, moms and moms-to-be may feel overwhelmed by the amount of information they are bombarded with daily. In San Angelo, a member of the community is offering moms the support they need to face these stressful times with information.

“The coronavirus or COVID-19 has just really affected the entire community, but it has also affected pregnancy and breastfeeding,” says Kaci Dyson.

Dyson, also known as The Mama Coach, is a registered nurse that works in labor and delivery. She offers prenatal and postnatal education, sleep consultations, and a multitude of advice for new and expectant mothers.

Public health guidelines have restricted access to resources that moms rely on, including breastfeeding classes and the number of guests they can have in the room during labor. For many moms having their closest family and friends in the room is vital but public health guidelines have limited the number of people that can be present.

“Their courses are being canceled out in the community and so they are missing out on education. During delivery the guests in the room are being limited, so they are only allowed one guest per delivery.”

Dyson wants to remind moms that of this time it is safe to continue breastfeeding their babies.

“We know that breast milk is full of antibodies to protect baby and it increases their immune system, said, Dyson. “We also know that when mom is sick or getting sick, her body naturally makes antibodies to feed that baby.”

She recommends moms take extra precautions, like changing their clothes and washing their hands thoroughly before having their babies latch on. Moms may also wear a face mask if they care concerned about exposing their babies since the virus is known to be transmitted through droplets. As of this time, pregnant moms aren’t facing an increased risk of infection.
