University Implements Mask Mandate Amid Rise in Covid Infections

ABILENE – Abilene Christian University will be implementing a two week mask mandate in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19 on campus.

Starting this week, "all faculty and students – regardless of vaccination status – will be required to wear face coverings in classrooms, labs, studios and other instructional spaces, and indoor Chapel gatherings."

According to the university, students will not be allowed to enter classrooms if they do not use a face covering that is in accordance with CDC guidelines.

The university has confirmed 10 new cases today, 59 active cases, and 51 individuals that are currently quarantined due to potential exposure.

The data shows 74.6% of the active cases are unvaccinated.

While the mask mandate is expected to only last two weeks, the university will reevaluate the situation to determine if additional actions are required.

The university has confirmed 104 COVID-19 cases since August 17.

Faculty and staff are also encouraged to wear face coverings and use social distancing in office spaces and all large events are encouraged to be held outside.
