SAN ANGELO, TX – San Angelo and Tom Green County officials Wednesday confirmed a spike in Covid-19 infections and hospitalizations following the Christmas holiday.
San Angelo Mayor Brenda Gunter and Tom Green County Judge Steve Floyd held a media conference Wednesday afternoon. Judge Floyd referred to the increase in the daily numbers over the last three days as a 'spike.'
Mayor Gunter said San Angeloans did well over the Thanksgiving holiday and may have let their guard down over Christmas. The mayor asked citizens to reconsider New Year's Eve party plans and follow the CDC guidelines to avoid another spike.
According to reports, there have been 623 new Covid infections since Monday and five deaths.
Covid hospitalizations rose from 93 on Monday to 103 Wednesday.
Shannon Medical Center received an additional 2,600 doses of the Moderna vaccine this week.
H-E-B, CVS Pharmacy and Walgreen's all have vaccines to administer to those deemed as front line workers and at risk individuals.
Mayor Gunter said the Covid-19 vaccine is free and will be available to individuals over 65 and those with underlying conditions soon.
The Covid-19 vaccine should be widely available to anyone who wants it in San Angelo by the summer.
