Covid Closes Bars in the Permian Basin Again

MIDLAND, TX -- After experiencing seven consecutive days with COVID-19 hospitalizations over 15 percent, businesses in Midland, Ector, and Andrews County will be required to reduce capacity to 50 percent.

According to the CEO of Midland Health, Russell Meyers, the restrictions took effect at midnight.

The mandate will also require bars that receive more than 51 percent of their sales from alcohol to close their doors.

During the city council meeting held on Monday night, County Judge Terry Johnson he didn't know what actions the state could take if a county decided against enforcing the mandate but assured Midland County will be following the order.

“This is serious," said Johnson.

Capacity may return to 75 percent when hospitalization falls below 15 percent for seven consecutive days.

Yet Johnson doesn't expect that to happen anytime soon based on the trends and comments made by health officials.

Hospital officials are concerned a spike could occur after Thanksgiving.
