SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Hooter’s Restaurant has fallen prey to the pandemic. Located at 4384 Sherwood Way, the restaurant will remain open for takeout, but onsite dining is closed, according to the sign on the door.
COVID-19 infections in San Angelo have been reported in alarming numbers over the past two weeks. Since Nov. 1, six of the 14 days have seen COVID-19 cases reported over 200 per day. Only one day saw a case count less than 100. Friday, Tom Green County officials urged citizens to re-double their efforts to social distance, wear masks, and wash hands often.
While the COVID-19 infections have skyrocketed to the highest levels since the pandemic began in March, deaths have remained relatively low. As of Friday, Tom Green County reported 105 total deaths from COVID-19 since the pandemic began in March: 63 from Tom Green County and 42 deaths of patients from other counties that were treated here.
Should hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients exceed 15 percent in our Trauma Service Area K that includes all counties in the Concho Valley, Tom Green County Judge Steve Floyd said his authority to allow restaurants and bars to remain open will be ceded to the area’’s Local Health Authority Dr. James Vretis.
Saturday, COVID-19 hospitalizations in San Angelo’s TSA K rose to the highest level yet at 11.74 percent. (See chart for trends).
The Starbucks located downtown on S. Bryant was also reported closed yesterday. According to a Facebook status update, a shift manager there said he had tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday.
The infections in the area may end up closing food service businesses by themselves, without an order to close from the local health authority, as COVID-19 works its way through our community.
The good news is that out of the 179,457 population in TSA K, we have only seen 105 deaths reported. This indicates for most of us, we will survive.
