Accurate COVID-19 Numbers Continue to Elude San Angelo Officials

SAN ANGELO, TX – San Angelo health officials are working to clarify confusing COVID-19 active case numbers reported daily. 

Here is the statement from the city:

We’ve had a lot of questions about why our active case number has not significantly decreased even though the number of positive cases has decreased.

Our health department is currently working on clarifying our active case category. The active case category is for positive COVID-19 cases who are being actively monitored by our health department. There are some older cases still under the “active case” category whose case investigation has not been closed out, thus they are still open/active. There are also cases who did not request a release form for whatever reason. If you are currently or have ever been a COVID-19 positive case and you have not been officially released from the City, please contact our nursing division at 325-657-4214 or fill out our online release form at cosatx.us/releaseform. City staff is currently reviewing all active cases and will be making some changes to our numbers in the near future.

A reminder from the CDC:

• For most persons with COVID-19 illness, isolation and precautions can generally be discontinued 10 days after symptom onset and resolution of fever for at least 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing medications, and with improvement of other symptoms.
• A limited number of persons with severe illness may produce replication-competent virus beyond 10 days that may warrant extending duration of isolation and precautions for up to 20 days after symptom onset; consider consultation with infection control experts.
• For persons who never develop symptoms, isolation and other precautions can be discontinued 10 days after the date of their first positive RT-PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 RNA.
